RTWM project technically started many years ago when in June 2000, I went to the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaiʻi and got to experience first hand places that I had only read about or seen photos of before.
Shortly thereafter, in roughly 2002, I wrote a short unpublished manifesto summarizing some of my most crucial thoughts. My manifesto did not however, outline enough to be a solid action plan. Also at this time, I did not know any potential mentors qualified to help me with the path and ideas I outlined in my manifesto. So instead I did what so many of us do, and created an alternate path. One that was in a way, a “regret minimization framework”, but not in complete alignment with my 2002 manifesto.
In 2003 after reading about a lot of things that interested me in a particular zone, I decided to relocate from the Sonoran Desert to the Cascadia Bio Region, or Pacific Northwest, as some like to call it. From there I used it as a primary base of operations to explore topics in the outdoors, technology, craft beer and gastronomy.
One of the original intentions was to move to a zone where skiing, particularly backcountry skiing, was a viable option with snow and terrain that could make that a reality.
This project formally started in early 2016, but its roots go back to April 2014.

From 2013 through 2014 I helped a partner pivot from a full-time role in the science world to a full-time role in the culinary world. A lot of that was based on my own experience pivoting from the restaurant world full-time. Which included grand-openings of five different restaurant concepts over eight years, to full-time in the technology world.
So in 2014, despite being heavily interested in travel and exploration, I launched a small project named Delicious Detector as a place to record some of that experience and thoughts. The idea behind the Detector was to focus on the classy restaurant world, craft breweries and distilleries. At one point I was doing blind taste testings on a sliding point scale at 250+ vendor beer festivals. (and doing well in them.) In conversations, people were sometimes asking me which distributor or brewery I worked for, etc.
However, after spending a lot of time in the world of the Detector, while still working in technology full-time, I could not sufficiently narrow down if it should be a fun hobby or part-time / full-time income generating pursuit through consulting, or some combination of the two. I honestly think, that I would have preferred to make it at least a partial income generating venture. But at that time it was still kinda tough to get people to pay you for your ‘opinion’ and ideas, even when you know your ideas and suggestions are almost certain to noticeably improve sales, quality, atmosphere, etc. (this is now often called ‘influencing’)
I recall fondly breaking the news of a 10 Barrel Brewing soda-style vending machine dispensing free bottles of Swill at the famous Kerry Park and reading my break about it on Seattle Beer News. 10 Barrel later went on to sell their operation to Anheuser-Busch (AB-InBev) in November 2014 in a private transaction rumored to be in the multi-millions.
In early 2015 a company I helped build for the last five years was acquired by a multi-national conglomerate. I decided to pursue other professional opportunities after the acquisition. So in April and May of 2015, I skied in Washington Pass zones for the first time. Despite living only a few hours away for many years and knowing about the zone forever. It was one of the earliest WA Pass Highway openings ever. I was able to hit it in amazing dry powder conditions that normally require snowmobile or helicopter access to reach. This experience helped me realize that despite years of skiing their was still a lifetime of new skiing zones and mountains to be hit in the 500 mile radius immediately surrounding me. It was just a matter of hitting them in the right conditions, if you did not want a suffer fest.
By the end of 2015, I realized that I was quite a ways off from the original manifesto that I wrote all those years ago in 2002. Skiing, travel, exploring, mountains, volcanos, lakes and rivers was what I was really interested in deep down. And still interested in technology and business topics at some levels too. That the culinary world, beer, wine and distillery worlds were a lot of fun as a hobby, even if a really serious one.
So in early 2016 I started what I called the RTWM project. Again, not with a super clear focus. Except to get out there exploring and seeing new places. And as much as possible, off-the-beaten-path places.
In summer 2016 I tried Whitewater rafting for the first time on the Methow River and it was a lot of fun. I think that experience helped me realize that too much time in high-stress technology roles and hyper-dense cities was wearing me down prematurely. Despite all the fun distractions, amazing restaurants, breweries, distilleries, etc.
In 2016, I really tried reaching out directly to people in skiing communities as way to get more engaged. The skiing community is always something that I have struggled with for many years. It has always been rather difficult for me to line up consistent ski partners. Which I think has a lot to do with the “clique’iness” of various skiing communities. And also that my earliest days of skiing as an adult were more oriented towards backcountry skiing. An extremely niche pursuit in those days, rather than lift skiing.
In 2016, I also experimented with trying my first new sport in a very long time, kiteboarding. As I was approaching nine years of year-round-skiing in summer 2016, I decided that venturing out into a new sport such as kiteboarding might be a fun thing to experiment with and learn. So I started with my first lessons in one of the best zones for this on Earth: The Columbia River Gorge and really enjoyed the process.
In 2017 I once again focused a lot on outdoor pursuits. I skied in Northwest Montana and Southern Alaska for the first time. In summer 2017 I also did my first overnight kayak trip. Which is something that had been on my mind for a while. I also participated in weekly Duck Dodge sailing races aboard Lake Union based S/V Free Spirit. As infamous as the weekly race is for shenanigans, for me at least, Duck Dodge, was more about being with fun people than the racing ‘competition’. It is a shit show of a race after all. But the post-race raft-ups are legendary and such a great time.
I also got to hang out in small town Michigan and spend some time on Lake Huron, which was a lot of fun. Later on in 2017 I made it to Yellowstone National Park for the first time since I was around twelve years old. I did some backpacking trips while in Yellowstone and also got to enjoy Bozeman, Montana briefly.
In April 2018, I once again found myself on the glaciers of Mount Rainier, but with a new crew I had only recently met. Two of us decided that in May when the days were just a little bit longer, we would go for the summit of Mount Rainier if conditions for it looked good at that time. In late May, on Memorial Day Weekend, four of us met up at Camp Muir above the Muir Snowfield. 2 Skiers, and 2 Splitboarders.
We slept for a few hours before departing for the summit around 02:00am. I was already having some disappointments as we were not bringing Skis and Splitboards for the summit attempt. We made good progress towards the summit but moved a little slower than we should. We noticed on the way up in freezing temperatures that some of the snow bridges on the Ingraham Glacier were in poor conditions due to some of the high temperatures that occurred earlier in the month at high-altitudes.
Before heading out we had made a decision that 09:30am would be the turn around point regardless of our elevation or point on the mountain. We found ourselves with about 1000 vertical feet of elevation separating our team from the summit at around 09:30am. To me it looked like it would be pretty smooth conditions up from that point, but two other team members were overly concerned about the weakening snow bridges at lower elevations. So we stuck with the original turn-around-plan, which left me with great disappointment. On the way down, the snow bridges looked to be holding up pretty well to me… But it was a good experience anyway with a crew that I had not previously done any missions with.
In July 2018, I was invited to join some day-hiking trips, and at one point found myself on a 27 mile “day-hike” in the Glacier Peak Wilderness which was a lot of fun. I also visited some Alpine Lakes in Washington State in summer 2018.
In the Autumn of 2018, I spent a lot of my free time in East Cascadia working on some fun freelance projects and enjoying nature as much as possible.
In October 2018 I flew to Salt Lake City Utah for a few days on a combined business and personal trip. I also made a short visit to Vancouver in October 2018.
Also in late 2018, a neighbor asked me to join him on a trip to Belize in central america. And in November 2018, we flew to Cancun, Mexico and drove to Placencia, Belize for the start of some exploration in Belize. Later on that month I completed my PADI Open Water Diver SCUBA Certification in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye near the famous Great Blue Hole. One of the highlights of this trip was in Belmopan Belize, where I saw some Mennonite’s selling handmade furniture they had produced. (Belize is well known for having a large population of Plautdietsch / Low German Speaking Mennonite’s)
In late December 2018, I drove to Salt Lake City, Utah in time for a New Years Eve Concert at The COMMONWEALTH ROOM where one of my newer favorite bands was doing a performance as the NYE Headliner, ORGŌNE.
Later on in January 2019 I did some backcountry skiing in Big Cottonwood Canyon. This is the first time I had been skiing in Utah since ~January 2008 when I skied at Snowbird and Alta in little Cottonwood Canyon.
For the rest of 2019, I spent a lot of my free time exploring various locations in the Salt Lake Valley and nearby canyons. This also included some visits to nearby Park City, Utah, which I really enjoyed. Including a visit to the Ritual Chocolate Factory in Park City.
In Summer 2019 I made time to visit Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area in Wyoming.
Later on in Autumn 2019 I did exploring in both Idaho Falls and Boise Idaho.
Winter 2019, I once again spent time in both Victoria and Vancouver British Columbia.
The earliest memories of my youth are mostly from time spent on Lake Michigan, one of North America’s Great Lakes. As a young kid, I moved to the Sonoran Desert, which was the exact opposite climate that I was used to. At that same time, I found myself going to the higher altitude mountains a few hours away on a regular basis. That’s likely when I first discovered my love for mountains and being outside.
Later on I spent time working in a recording studio and concert halls, to five different restaurant concepts. More recently I have spent time working at technology startup companies and manufacturing companies. I’ve also been hiking and skiing in some of the most beautiful areas of the world for a number of years. More recently, traveling to large cities and beautiful off-the-beaten-path, rugged places on two continents. (and two of the largest, most rugged islands in the world)

I have been skiing in Washington, British Columbia, and Oregon for over 10 years.
My primary skiing focus has been backcountry (randonnée) skiing.
I enjoy long descents on Cascade volcanos and steep descents throughout the Cascade Range, which is my home range. I’ve also skied in Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Utah and Arizona.
Historically my favorite ski zones are in or near:
In January 2017, I skied in Whitefish Montana, and in March 2017, the Kenai Mountains Alaska.
I’m looking to expand my skiing resume to other areas.
Over the last few years, I’ve become increasingly interested in travel and exploration of all kinds. While I have done some exploring in North America, (e.g. backpacking in Yellowstone National Park September 2017, road tripping September 2019).
I’m also interested in international vagabonding and increasingly interested in motorcycle, sailing, and van based excursions.
One of my biggest van-life inspirations is Ben Jamin from KombiLife.com and his ~five year Hasta Alaska Project. Ben and Leah ended up staying with me for a couple days in late 2015, when Ben was traveling to the U.K. for the first time in seven years. This was both interesting and exciting all at the same time. Getting to know and interact with an accomplished long-distance, van-life crew that I respect in multiple ways.
